The sheer dress trend is quickly shaping up to be one of the defining looks of the 2020s. And Mindy Kaling just put her own autumnal spin on it.
Glammed up for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her HBO Max show The Sex Lives of College Girls, the Never Have I Ever creator wore her lightly ombréd hair straight and sleek. She kept her makeup naturalish and wore simple silver jewelry to match her gray Tom Ford heels. It’s the dress, by Oscar de la Renta, that really shines. And literally shines.
The sequined garment has a silver vine and amber strawberry pattern applied over a sheer, long-sleeve fitted dress. Kaling wore a nude slip underneath to create a look that’s sexy but not too revealing. My favorite detail is the sequins that continue past the hem; it’s touches like those that separate couture from commercial.
Stylist Molly Dickson posted the look and full glam credits to Instagram, including the tailor:

Tailoring! That’s the secret. If you’re going to do sheer, it’s gotta fit just right.
If you absolutely need this dress for what must be a very dramatic Thanksgiving dinner, it’s available for $7,290.
This is definitely the fall version of the Oscar de la Renta spring florals Taylor Swift wore to the Grammys a couple years ago:
Hmm…now I’m wondering if maybe I could grab a Skims bodysuit, a little tulle, a glue gun, and $100 worth of Michael’s crafting supplies and re-create this ish at home?
Sheer isn’t the only trend Mindy Kaling’s jumped on this year. She also embraced the Barbiecore moment with a bright magenta minidress that would make the girly Kelly Kapoor proud. As she wrote in her Instagram caption, “First of all, how dare you?” But Mindy, how dare any of us?
