Margot Robbie is currently promoting her latest film, Amsterdam, around the world. Naturally, the perennially stylish movie star is providing a master class in red-carpet glamour at the same time. For the London premiere of her mystery comedy, Robbie illustrated that an elegant black dress, when done right, can be anything but boring.
The Oscar-nominated actor wore a black cutout dress and a dramatic cape on the red—or, in this specific case, green—carpet. The look, from Celine, leans into old-school Hollywood glamour, à la Audrey Hepburn, and showcases that sometimes less really is more.
A dress code was clearly decreed for the big night: The main cast for Amsterdam wore coordinated all-black looks. (A notable shout-out to actor Rami Malek, who showed us that James Bond is not the only one who can make an all-black suit his very own.)
The subdued look is a refreshing spin for Margot Robbie. The internet has become accustomed—dare we even say obsessed—with paparazzi-captured on-set photos of her flashy, technicolor looks as Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming movie. (Which, sadly, we must wait until the summer of next year to see in theaters.) Since filming has wrapped on the project, Robbie has leaned back into her signature clean and classic style—rocking a standout boxy and sharply tailored suit just last week. There’s something Morticia Addams–esque and otherworldly about this dress, but it doesn’t feel at all like a costume.
And Robbie’s black dress fits into a rising trend among the leading ladies of Hollywood. Euphoria star Zendaya opted for a voluminous, Grace Kelly–inspired Valentino black dress for her appearance at the Emmys this month. The dress quickly made the rounds on social media—much like Robbie’s is right now. It must be true: Black never goes out of style.
