With a seven-decade career and an EGOT under her belt, Rita Moreno has more red carpet experience than anyone at the 2022 Oscars. And with tonight’s showstopping look, 90-year-old Moreno made sure we knew it.
Wearing a sleek black Carolina Herrera gown with dramatic, sculptural sleeves, Moreno finished the look with a pair of crystal-embellished black flats and a pair of silver Verdura earrings. The real standout piece, though, was Moreno’s playful feathered headpiece, bringing a touch of throwback, Bob Mackie–inspired glamour to Hollywood’s biggest night.
Moreno was attending the Oscars in support of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, one of the night’s most highly nominated films with seven awards up for grabs, including best supporting actress for Ariana DeBose, who plays Anita. (Naturally, the pair shared a hug when they were reunited on the red carpet.) All the way back in 1961, Moreno picked up the award for her performance in the very same role. Fittingly, Spielberg wrote an entirely new character for Moreno’s return in last year’s remake.
Six decades later, Moreno looks just as glamorous as she did on the red carpet in 1961, when she wore a dress with a black-and-gold brocade skirt—a look so good that she wore it again to the Oscars in 2018. Tonight, though, she proved the axiom that style is ageless. “I just love the way I look,” Moreno told Laverne Cox during E!’s red carpet coverage. “I can’t get over myself!” Neither can we, Rita.
