Ever since the first film stills of a bubbly Margot Robbie in Greta Gerwig’s were unveiled—she plays the title role in the film, hitting cinemas next summer—there’s been a sickeningly sweet style shift. Enter: #Barbiecore.
Barbie is the unlikely muse of 2022. The antithesis of goth-girl summer’s emo attitude, Barbie style is all about looking pretty in pink. Take the lead from Margot, who’s been living her best blonde-bombshell life on the set of the film. The actor has been papped strutting in Western flares and a waistcoat, and rollerblading in stretchy ’80s neon gym gear. (Think Jane Fonda home-exercise videos on acid.) Her Ken, Ryan Gosling, has twinned her vibrant looks, donning a fresh bleached hairdo to fit the part. Lizzo and Vanessa Hudgens were also spotted wearing the iconic hot pink color this year.
Meanwhile, IRL lovebirds Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly have set out to rival the onscreen duo. At the premiere of Machine Gun Kelly’s new documentary, Life in Pink, the pair looked every inch a real-life Barbie and Ken, sporting matching pink rinses to boot. Both championed London-based designers for the occasion: Megan arrived in a minidress by 2021 LVMH Prize winner Nensi Dojaka, and MGK in a crop top by rising star Chet Lo. The following day, Megan continued her Barbie-inspired looks in metallic separates by The Andamane, worn with a crystal-choked mini bag by L’Alingi.

Other A-listers channelling Barbie this summer include Kim Kardashian, who she swapped her gothic black Balenciaga Lycra for powder pink pantaboots earlier this month, made extra sugary with a cropped zip-up hoodie and an encrusted Balenciaga Hourglass bag.

While Barbie pink may be everywhere right now, the hue belongs to Pierpaolo Piccioli, as far as fashion’s concerned. Valentino’s creative director dedicated his entire autumn/winter 2022 collection to hot pink, which was developed in collaboration with Pantone.
It’s the perfect pink for #Barbiecore, as proven by the countless stars that have worn pieces from the collection. Lizzo served a Barbie-esque look in a flippy dress, tights, and mega platforms at a screening this month; Simone Ashley channelled her inner Barbie at the BAFTAs; Dua Lipa has worn Valentino pink off-stage while on tour; and Sebastian Stan looked very Ken in pink at the Met Gala.
The main #Barbiecore message? More is more. Play Aqua’s Barbie anthem “Barbie Girl” on repeat, and you’re all set.
