Emma Watson is a champion of sustainable fashion choices, so it’s no surprise that she decided to rewear a dress from her red-carpet archive for a rare public appearance at the Wimbledon Women’s Finals.
The 33-year-old actor loosely stuck to the Wimbledon whites theme, wearing an ivory lace minidress by Oscar de la Renta that she first appeared in back in 2017. Watson has been a fan of the New York–based label throughout her career (see the gray-tiered gown she selected from its ateliers for the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two).
It was on the Beauty and the Beast promo trail that the actor launched the (now inactive) Instagram account The Press Tour to document her conscious fashion choices and introduce her followers to the ethical brands that she loves. She wore this particular minidress at a media conference in LA, explaining that—together with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray—she chose it because of its incredible craftsmanship and the brand’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
As Emma Watson noted, the hand embroidery on the silk taffeta and the silk faille bow were both done in Taroni’s workshops in Italy, which specialize “in the highest-quality couture fabrics” and “are committed to reducing [their] environmental impact, including investing in solar energy and…removing all toxic chemicals from [their] supply chain.” The dress was then made in the Oscar de la Renta atelier in New York, with the panels cut and folded by hand. Even the zip on the dress was repurposed from an unused sample.
It’s only fitting, then, that such a special dress would be reworn by Watson again and again. The keen tennis fan sat on Centre Court next to the singer Lewis Capaldi and watched the Princess of Wales hand the trophy to this year’s Wimbledon champion: Markéta Vondroušová.
