Corsets Were the Most Popular Plus-One at the 2022 Met Gala 

It’s always intriguing to note the trends that emerge as the world’s most fashionable A-listers interpret a Met Gala theme, particularly when it’s something as spectacular as gilded glamour. Gloves, headpieces, and lashings of sparkling jewelry have all emerged as favorites from the night, but nothing has given the event’s white-tie dress code more of a boost than the corset. 

For this year’s guests, the boned form-enhancing piece perfectly fulfilled the Met Gala brief, an oomph-inspired allusion to the hourglass-figured Gibson Girl of the mid-nineteenth century, and a brilliant nod to bingeing on Bridgerton.

Cue Gigi Hadid in vampish burgundy boned Versace, her Latex corset paired with leggings and a voluminous padded cape; Billie Eilish giving old-world glam, sporting a cinched Gucci gown made entirely with upcycled materials and featuring a corsage detail corset and padded bustle. Precious Lee, Paloma Elsesser, Bella Hadid, and Maisie Williams also celebrated the corset, with burlesque nods to lingerie details in monochromatic tones. Sydney Sweeney and Tessa Thompson softened the sculptural cleavage-enhancing silhouette with corseted dresses in pastel and soft hues.
